What it does

Exa runs web searches on request and returns a list of matching pages together with their readable text. It can also fetch the content of pages you already know, and it has a research mode that runs several searches in a row and returns the findings with their sources.

What agents use it for

An agent uses Exa when its own web search is not enough, for example to find recent articles about a competitor, to read a set of known pages for a briefing, or to compile a list of companies that match a description. The agent receives the pages and their sources and drafts its answer from them, so you can check each statement against the cited page.

Setup

Setup effort: Low. In ChatGPT and Claude, Exa comes from the plugin or connector directory and links to your Exa account. Other tools reach it through its MCP server or its API, which needs some configuration. Ask your client before client material goes to an outside search service.

Pricing model

Usage-based. Pay as you go from prepaid credits, with a free monthly allowance; enterprise terms on request.
